How to take care of skin prone to pigmentation?

What is pigmentation?

Cosmetologists define three types:

  1. Pathological hyperpigmentation – formation of darker spots on lighter skin;
  2. Physiological pigmentation – the appearance of sunburn or darkening of the skin under the influence of ultraviolet rays;
  3. Skin hypopigmentation – loss of the skin’s ability to produce pigment.

In this blog, we will focus on the first point – pathological hyperpigmentation, as this is the most common problem.

What causes pigmentation?

There are many causes of hyperpigmentation. It can develop under the influence of internal or external factors.

Some internal factors include:

  • genetic predisposition;
  • endocrine diseases;
  • hormonal changes (including pregnancy, breastfeeding and contraception);
  • inflammatory processes in the body;
  • psychological stress;
  • lack of nutrients.

External causes of pathological hyperpigmentation include:

  • prolonged exposure to the sun;
  • skin damage;
  • the influence of chemical agents;
  • as a result of certain medications.

For a successful fight against hyperpigmentation, it is important to find its cause and, if possible, eliminate the source of its occurrence.

How to lighten pigmentation:

To achieve good results with pigmentation your home care should include:

  1. Gentle cleansing in the morning and evening;
  2. Regular removal of dead cells according to skin type and condition;
  3. Sufficient hydration of the outer layer of the epidermis (cuticle);
  4. Restoration of barrier structures of the skin;
  5. Use of whitening or depigmentation products;
  6. Use of soothing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents;
  7. Maintaining a healthy microbiome;
  8. Daily use of an adequate amount of sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection.

Visible results are achievable with persistence. ❤
